Photography Resources
B & H Photo
The best source of camera gear and film on the web. Great prices, selection,
and service.
Canon USA
Canon makes great film and digital camera equipment. I currently own and use
Canon gear. Their website is a great place for information on their latest
non-imaginary products.
Nikon USA
Nikon makes excellent film and digital cameras. Check out Nikon's site for
product news and specs.
Leica Camera GmBH
Leica makes some of the best cameras and sport optics in the world. While I
can't afford their photo gear, I do own a Leica binocular and it is fantastic!
Digital Photography Review
Considering making the switch to digital? Interested in software, firmware, and
hardware to make the most of your digital experience? This comprehensive site
provides extensive reviews of digital photo gear, as well as the
latest digital news.
Nærfoto Bjørn Rørslett
Bjørn Rørslett has a unique style of photography, with an emphasis
on UV and IR images. His site also offers thorough and unbiased
equipment reviews, especially for Nikon gear.
Naturescapes.net
Naturescapes.net is an online magazine and forum for nature photographers. There are
interesting and often inspiring articles about the artistic and technical aspects of nature
photography, gear reviews, discussion forums, and (my favorite) an interactive image critique
gallery, where you can post your own photographs and comment on images made by
others at every level of expertise.
NaturePhotographers.net
Naturephotographers.net is another good place show off your work and get
feedback from others. Like Naturescapes.net, it is also an online magazine, with good articles
about various aspects of nature photography.
Birdphotographers.net
Another fine online magazine and forum, run by Arthur Morris and friends. What could be
better than to have Artie himself critique your images? If you're not a bird photographer,
not to worry; as Artie says, "It ain't just birds."
Other Nature Photographers
Fred Atwood
My friend Fred is the most versatile nature photographer I know, as you can see
in his online portfolio. He's also an excellent biology teacher at Flint Hill
School in Oakton, VA.
Nathan Dappen Photography
My buddy Nate is a great photographer, not only in the realm of nature and wildlife,
but also people, travel, and fine art. You can see some of his beautiful images here.
Kari Post Photography
Kari is a talented young nature photographer based in New Jersey. Check out her
website for some lovely nature images. Kari's bird photographs are especially
good, so make sure to visit her avian gallery!
Glenn Bartley Nature Photography
Glenn is a superb bird photographer based in British Columbia. He has great
coverage of the birds of the Pacific Northwest and a rapidly growing collection of
bird images from elsewhere in the US, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.
Arthur Morris - Birds as Art
Arthur Morris is a legend among bird photographers. I especially recommend
Artie's On-Line Bulletins.
Frans Lanting On-Line
Frans Lanting is my favorite nature photographer. His ability to interact with
his subjects is unsurpassed. See his beautiful images here.
Academic Links
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and
Technology
Going to high school at TJ was a great experience. It manages to combine great
academics (perhaps the best in the country) with strong extracurricular
activities and sports. After four years at TJ, college is no sweat! Especially
when you follow a quarter of your classmates to...
The University of Virginia
My alma mater, UVA is a great place to be as an undergraduate.
Charlottesville is beautiful, many departments are among the best in the
nation, and of course Mr. Jefferson's influence is anywhere you want to see it.
Pretentious? Not a bit of it!
The University of California,
Davis
I worked at UC Davis in the lab of Dr. Gail Patricelli, who studies
communication behavior in birds. Gail is an Assistant Professor in the
Section of Evolution and Ecology, and a member of the
Animal Behavior, Population
Biology, and Ecology graduate
groups. UC Davis is a powerhouse in the study of evolution and ecology, with
perhaps the largest and most prolific department in the world.
The University of California, Los Angeles
UCLA is situated in a beautiful campus in northwestern Los Angeles. The university has
some amazing and highly interdisciplinary academic
programs. I am pursuing my Ph.D. with Dr.
Greg Grether in the Department
of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. We have a dynamic and growing faculty
conducting innovative and integrative research in evolution and ecology.
National Science
Foundation: Research Experiences for Undergraduates
If you're a college student interested in science or engineering, the NSF
offers these paid REU positions for the summer. I have done two (Blandy
Experimental Farm in 2002 and the Rocky
Mountain Biological Laboratory
in 2003) and they were two awesome summers in the field.
Hastings Natural History Reservation
Part of the UC Natural Reserve System and the UC Berkeley Museum of Vertebrate
Zoology, the Hastings Reserve is beautiful and birdy. I worked here as a field
assistant for Dr. Walt Koenig in the summer of 2005.
Blandy Experimental Farm
Administered by the UVA Department of Environmental Sciences, Blandy is a
beautiful property in the Shenandoah Valley. I did my summer 2002 REU here,
working under advisor Dr. Dave Carr to study the ecological implications of
inbreeding and founder effects in the Square-stemmed Monkeyflower, Mimulus
ringens. The Orland E. White State Arboretum of Virginia is also located
here.
Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory
RMBL and the town of Gothic are spectacular, hidden high in the West Elk range
of Western Colorado. RMBL is somewhat unique in being an independent
research station, financially self-sufficient and unaffiliated with any
university. I conducted my summer 2003 REU research here under advisor
Dr.
Chris Floyd (now at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire). Most of my
photographs from Colorado were taken in or near Gothic.
The Searchable Ornithological Research
Archive (SORA)
SORA, administered by the University of New Mexico, allows users to search for
and download articles from major ornithology journals, like The Auk and The
Condor. It's all free and full-text.
Other Stuff
Complete Sun and Moon
Data for One Day
The US Naval Observatory runs this highly useful site, which allows you to
calculate the exact times of sunrise and sunset based on the date and your
location. Very valuable for the photographer who wants to catch sunrise or
sunset!
